MoonCare Project: Supporting Girls' Health and Dignity in Rural Communities

In some rural parts of Northern Guangdong, growing up is still a quiet struggle for many girls.

 

Menstrual poverty - the lack of access to basic sanitary products, proper health education, and social understanding - continues to affect their daily lives, self-esteem, and future development.

 

From May 15 to 17, 2025, TVCMALL partnered with the Guangdong University Student Aid Society to launch the MoonCare Project, a targeted initiative under our broader Help Them Thrive Program (HTTP). This project was designed to provide puberty and hygiene education for adolescent girls in two rural schools in Yunan County, Yunfu.

 

 

What the MoonCare Project Delivered

Over three days, our volunteer team and university partners visited classrooms, engaged with students and teachers, and shared essential information about adolescent health, personal hygiene, and menstruation.

 

 

We distributed nearly 500 MoonCare kits, each containing:

 

 - Sanitary pads

 - Educational booklets on puberty and menstrual health

 - Emotional support and a safe space to learn and ask questions

 

 

These materials were carefully prepared to ensure that the girls not only received physical support but also gained the knowledge and confidence to understand their bodies without shame or fear.

 

Why This Matters

 

Many girls in rural communities experience their first periods without access to quality products or any guidance. Social stigma surrounding menstruation can lead to silence, embarrassment, and even missed school days.

 

The MoonCare Project directly addresses these challenges, aiming to:

 

 - Break the taboo around menstruation

 - Provide accessible and age-appropriate education

 - Build emotional support through trusted community connections

 

“Through this project, we hope to build a bridge between society and young girls in remote areas - offering them knowledge, dignity, and care,” said one of the volunteer team leaders.
