The Power of Common Sense

06/06/2023 TVCMALL CEO Insights

By Leo Chen, the founder & CEO of TVCMALL

Before reading the post, ask yourself: What are the three most influential common sense for you personally?

1. What is common sense

It can be roughly divided into two types. One is basic knowledge, which is the basic instruction that a sane adult living in society should have, including survival skills (self-care), basic labor skills, and basic knowledge of the natural sciences and the humanities and social sciences. All these are based on a reverence for nature.

The other is daily consensus, which refers to the common daily consensus among individuals in society. No matter whether any academic question or basic communication among people is based on common sense for further discussion.

On my personal note, common sense is the crystallization of the wisdom of our predecessors without limitations of time and space. History is often full of well-tested common sense, such as the core tenets of Taoism, the general tenets of philosophy, and Chinese classics like the Analects of Confucius. Of course, it is affected by the time people live in, the position of the group and the world outlook, view of life and values of the group.

2. The critical values of common sense to the individual

  • By taking full advantage of common sense, you can better...
  • Master basic survival skills.
  • Manage relationships well.
  • Cope with rapid change. You know, survival of the fittest.
  • Create a better life. Inherit the wisdom of our predecessors and avoid detours.

3. Common sense that needs to be learned inside TVCMALL

  • Guided by values: In a system, everyone has their role and value. What we should do is fulfill our responsibilities, make corresponding contributions, and collectively advance the progress of the system.
  • Organization voice: Organizations have the need to voice their opinions, especially stronger ones. Expressing the organization's core goals is aimed at facilitating its operations and helping individuals within the organization better align with it. The organization's spokesperson will develop and grow through practice. But it is difficult for him to cover all aspects, so excellent teams should be more tolerant, provide more feedback, and offer diverse advice.
  • Bottom-line strategy: In a precarious environment, the highest strategy of the enterprise is to ensure the survival and continuity of the business. This requires flexibility, adaptability, risk management as well as an active search for innovation and opportunities.
  • Duty of leaders: A healthy organization and its leadership are interdependent. Only by fulfilling their duties can they reach a win-win situation.
  • Secrets to success:
  1. Tell the truth and offer suggestions. By fostering honest and transparent communication, offering constructive suggestions, actively listening, and embracing continuous learning, individuals can contribute to positive and productive organizational interactions.
  2. Embrace conflict and change. It is a positive attitude and behavioral approach that fosters open communication, innovation, and learning. By embracing conflict, we can solve problems, promote collaboration, and develop stronger solutions. Embracing change allows us to adapt to evolving environments and demands, ensuring competitiveness and continuous growth.
  3. No greedy, no evil. TVCMALL adheres to equality and fairness in interactions and collaborations, avoiding exploitation or unfair treatment of others. We follow ethical principles, avoiding harm, deceit, or oppression towards others.

4. Key recognition to common sense

Common sense should match your present and future as much as possible. Individuals should strive to align their actions and decisions with widely accepted common sense, the reality of the situation, and their own understanding and expectations of the future. This helps ensure that our actions are in line with practical circumstances and widely accepted norms, enhancing our adaptability and success in personal and social life.

The experience of predecessors can be used for reference, but not copied. Drawing from the experiences of others is valuable, but it should be approached with a critical and innovative mindset. By understanding the context, engaging in self-reflection and evaluation, fostering innovation and adaptability, integrating diverse perspectives, and engaging in practice and feedback, we can better combine the experiences of previous generations with our present and future, formulating decisions and actions that are more aligned with practical circumstances and personal needs.

Common sense has to keep up with the WUCA era. Common sense needs continuous updating and adjustment to adapt to change and uncertainty. By engaging in lifelong learning, acquiring information, cultivating adaptability, exploring innovation, and engaging in interdisciplinary collaboration, we can better keep pace with the times and THRIVE together!
