Set your mobile phone accessory business up for success with Qi2-certified products. The latest wireless charging standard is set to bridge the gap between Apple and iPhone and set a united global standard across all wireless devices.
Wireless charging has been an industry standard for years, and the Qi standard (pronounced chee) has had some mixed product reviews since its original launch in 2010. The Qi2 wireless chargers are here and hold potential and promises since the standard announcement in early 2023 to give an elevated user experience and even bridge the divide between Apple and Android products.
With the ongoing goal to create a global standard in wireless device charging, this latest model has undergone substantial testing and certification processes to create an unmatched user experience and top-notch charging performance. Let's explore how the Qi2 charger can elevate your entire inventory and make your business THRIVE.
Qi2 is an open wireless charging standard from the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC). It borrows MagSafe technology from Apple and features its main selling point, the Magnetic Power Profile (MPP). The MPP allows Qi2-branded devices to add a ring of magnets to assist with the charger alignment and boost charging speeds. Apple was closely involved with developing the Qi2 standard, which is reflected in device compatibility, which we'll outline later.
Qi2 is fully backward compatible, meaning an older Qi device can be used safely on a Qi2 charger. However, anecdotal reports say that attempting to charge a Qi2 device with a Qi charger isn't compatible.
Improvements from the Qi wireless charging standard include:
- Faster charging: Qi2 allows the same charging speed as MagSafe chargers (15 watts), a huge upgrade from the original Qi standard of 5 watts. There's some speculation that the Wireless Power Consortium will increase this rate as they work to improve the Qi2 standard, but this may not be rolled out until later in 2025.
- More efficient charging: The Magnetic Power Profile helps align the electromagnetic coils from device to charger, allowing wireless charging to occur. The better this alignment, the more efficient the charging, and the magnets themselves line everything up perfectly, so there's no lost energy.
This leads to a secondary benefit of better battery health since misaligned coils often lead to excess heat as that energy is lost, which drains overall battery health in the long run.
- More accessory compatibility: Qi2 devices can be charged by any Qi2-certified charger, which means iPhone and Android users can find some common ground. Unfortunately, Qi chargers and MagSafe accessories aren't likely to be interchangeable with newer Qi2 devices. Now, here's where it gets a little tricky:
For Qi-supporting phones that don't feature the magnetic ring, there are cases where the magnetic ring is Qi2 charger compatible. This is a big selling point for a lot of Android model users.
As with most technology, launches and rollouts sometimes are a bit fuzzy across devices. Some quirks that impact device compatibility and may cause consumers a little trouble are:
- Extended Power Profile (EPP) standard: This standard refers to devices that are compliant with Qi2 specifications, but lack the official Qi2 approval and can't feature any Qi2 branding, logos, or references. They can, however, hold the Qi logo. Essentially, the Qi2 standard means that devices will only be MPP, and those devices must include compatible magnets in their construction.
- "Qi2 Ready" devices: While the bridge between Apple and Android is under construction, only the Samsung Galaxy S25 series is compatible with the Qi2 chargers. While not a Qi2 device, Qi2 Ready cases are available for this series to be compatible with these chargers. As a plus, these cases don't compromise the charging speed a certified Qi2 device features.
The Wireless Power Consortium has to certify each device before it can feature the Qi2 logo, thereby promising that the device meets WPC's standards. This can be a lengthy process, and considering that phone manufacturing can be a long process regardless, TVCMALL expects more Qi2 devices and chargers to be available later in the year, especially from Android.
Currently, the following device series is Qi2 branded:
- Apple iPhone 12-16 models
- Anker
- Belkin
- Nomad
- Mophie
While Android isn't officially supporting Qi2 on their devices, phones often have a two-year lead time, and this may be a primary reason why we aren't seeing as many Qi2 devices from this brand.
