Google Pixel 9 and 9 Pro: Release, Specs, Price, & More

With the release of the Pixel 8 series, Google cemented its flagship phone as a solid alternative to the Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy series. The fact that Google continues to lead the charge into AI innovations means Pixel is a cutting-edge choice rather than a copycat.

Google Pixel 9 Series Models

The biggest shake-up to the Pixel 9 series is the addition of another model. Much like Apple, Google is adding a Pro phone model in the smaller base size. So, the Pixel 9 series will include the base Pixel 9 with the addition of two Pro models.

The Pixel Pro 9 will now be the same size as the base Pixel 9 while rocking the higher-tier, Pro-level features. The newly minted Pixel 9 Pro XL will be the larger, higher-tier model we’re used to seeing. The rumored dimensions of all three models are below.

 

 

Note that the display on the Pixel 9 Pro is larger than the base model. This is because we expect the Google Pixel 9 Pro will have a slimmer bezel.

Also, regardless of which model you purchase, you’ll need a new Google Pixel 9 case due to the new series’ slimmer profile. You’ll also need a new Google Pixel 9 screen protector.

 

Google Pixel 9 Series: Camera

You’ll be able to spot a Google Pixel 9 series by the distinctive way its lenses are arranged in a camera bar island.

We expect much of the hardware surrounding the camera to remain the same as the Pixel 8 series. But that doesn’t mean there won’t be marked improvements in the Google Pixel 9 series photos. In its bid to be the forerunner in AI, Google will likely have marked software improvements in the Pixel 9’s camera capabilities.

Just like the Pixel 8, don’t expect the base Pixel 9 to have a telephoto lens. Google will probably reserve it for the Pro XL and (we hope) the Google Pixel 9 Pro. The highly anticipated result will be a personalized assistant capable of offering targeted recommendations based on past user experience.

 

Pixie, Google's New AI-Powered Assistant

The biggest buzz about the new Google Pixel 9 series is about its new AI-powered assistant, Pixie. The word is that Pixie will revolutionize the world of AI assistants, in part, because she will be powered by the Gemini Nano LLM model.

 

Google Pixel 9 Series Price & Release Date

The Pixel 8A will be more expensive than the Pixel 7A, jumping to $542 USD, an increase of $73 USD. While still in the affordable range as far as smartphones go, it’s a serious increase in just one year.

If the Pixel 8A’s price increase is any indication, we could see the Pixel 9 cost significantly more than the Pixel 8’s current cost of $699, with similar increases to the Google Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL models.
