I. Original

 

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. With a history of over 2,000 years, the festival is closely associated with the legend of Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet and statesman from the kingdom of Chu during the Warring States period in China. He was a loyal minister who advocated for political reform but was expelled from the court due to the opposition of the king. In despair, he drowned himself in the Miluo River. 

 

Eager to protect his body from being eaten by fish, locals, who admired Qu Yuan's patriotism, throw glutinous rice dumplings called zongzi into the water and race in boats to scare away the creatures. They also beat gongs and drums, and splashed water with their paddles to ward off evil spirits. In this way, the Dragon Boat Festival was established. 

 

II. Traditional Activities

 

i) Classic snacks

People keep wrapping zongzi in bamboo leaves in the present day, conveying the rice offerings made to appease Qu Yuan's soul and prevent fish from devouring his body. In addition, there is also the habit of eating salted eggs, eel and mung bean cakes.

Dragon boat races, where teams paddle in long, narrow boats shaped like dragons, have become an integral event of the special day, reenacting the search for Qu Yuan.
